About Hans Wegner

Hans Wegner (1914-2007) is master craftsman with a keen understanding of the properties of natural material and in particular wood. He is synonymous with 20th Century Danish Modernism.

Wegner was the son of a shoemaker in Southern Jutland and at the tender age of 14 he started his fledgling career with an apprenticeship with Danish master cabinetmaker H. F. Stahlberg. His career really kicked off when he joined Arne Jacobsen and Erik Moller to design furniture for the Aarhus Town Hall. He later started working and collaborating with the much older and experienced Johannes Hansen and their furniture was sold at Hansen’s store on Copenhagen’s Bredgade. This collaboration was unusual at the time but proved successful and really became the foundation for Danish furniture design.

Wegner through his simple and elegant designs was able to capture the inner soul of furniture. His training as a cabinetmaker allowed him to integrate exacting joinery techniques with exquisite form. His aesthetic was also based on a deep respect for wood and its characteristics and patina.

1B2G has an enviable collection of Hans Wegner vintage chairs, and Hans Wegner vintage tables.
